"Roads" was a commonly used nautical term in the 18th century, and "Hampton Roads" is still used to refer to the water area as well as the land area comprising the Southeastern region of Virginia.

Hampton Roads is believed to be named after Henry Wriothesley, 3rd Earl of Southampton, who was an early and loyal supporter of the colonization of Virginia, as well as an active member of the governing council of The Virginia Company.
